Passing this information on from Gaylen Moore...

(Note - I participated in the development of some of these guides and recommend the program. The science connection for some of the units is obvious - Packaging and Other Structures, Mapping, and Mechanisms all work easily into a number of physical and/or earth science units. Not so sure about the other two titles, but Gary and Jim are very good at helping you make connections between the design technology topics and your individual curriculum needs... Mike)

Free 2004 Summer Institute for Professional Developers and Teacher Educators

City Technology: Stuff That Works! City College of New York, New York City Sunday, June 27 to Thursday July 1, 2004

Stuff That Works! is a series of design technology curriculum guides for elementary and middle school teachers developed through an NSF grant at the City College of New York by Gary Benenson, a mechanical engineer, and Jim Neujahr, a science educator. The curriculum consists of five units: Mapping; Mechanisms; Packaging; Designed Environments; and Signs, Symbols, and Codes. The guides include classroom-tested activities that use common inexpensive household materials and identify the national math, science, technology, and ELA standards related to each activity. City Technology also provides a Guide for Professional Developers which includes guidelines and resources for: 1) developing and facilitating hands-on workshops for teachers; and 2) using City Technology’s on-line forum to prepare and support teachers during the classroom implementation period.

Professional developers in urban and rural school systems in Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin are currently implementing Stuff That Works! with local teachers.

Free Summer Institute. During the five-day institute, 15-30 participants will learn each of the curriculum units in hands-on workshops facilitated at the City College of New York by the curriculum’s designers. Participants will receive a complete set of the Stuff That Works! curriculum guides and a copy of the Guide for Professional Developers. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided each day.
