Dien Bien Phu victory, a modern miracle

The Dien Bien Phu victory was a knockdown blow dealt to the French colonialists and symbolised the common strength and firm resolve of the Vietnamese people to continue the patriotic war to final victory.

This was extracted from an article written by Geetesh Sharma, President of the India-Vietnam Friendship Committee, West Bengal, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory.

He wrote: "India had all along been an ardent admirer of the indomitable spirit of the Vietnamese people and active supporters of their determined resolve to earn liberation. Therefore, India celebrated the historic victory of Vietnam in Dien Bien Phu with much fanfare and festivity, terming it a victory of not only Vietnam but that of all oppressed people on the globe."

"Vietnamese people's victory was a miracle in itself in that, on the one side, there was mighty French power backed by the so-called super-power, the US and an army well equipped with ultra modern weaponry while, on the other side, there was the people's army of Vietnam although poorly equipped with indigenous weaponry yet brimming with enthusiasm, resolve and confidence."

"The credit for this miraculous and remarkable victory of Vietnam goes to the ever inspiring leadership of President Ho Chi Minh and that of a great military strategist General Vo Nguyen Giap besides the most determined patriotic armed forces of Vietnam and all the peace loving forces through out the world who expressed their whole hearted support and solidarity with the people of Vietnam in their struggle for liberation."

"President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap are household names in India and are held at very high esteem. They are admired and respected not only as the leaders of Vietnamese liberation movement but also as true friends of India."

He stressed "to combat the brutal hegemony designs of the imperialist forces, the spirit of Dien Bien Phu must be kept alive to enable the people's power to emerge victorious in the final and decisive battle."

Finally, he wrote: "We salute the great and inspiring personality like that of General Vo Nguyen Giap and the heroic people of Vietnam who set the glaring example of resisting the foreign aggressors and their hegemony to preserve sovereignty, freedom and peace to ensure development." (VNA)

Viet Minh's determination, a key to Dien Bien Phu Victory: former French soldier

Vietnam's Resistance Order, first class (Huy chuong Khang chien Hang nhat), Victory Order, first class (Huy chuong Chien thang Hang nhat), plenty of commendation and a letter with the signature of Ho Chi Minh, these honours do not grace a Vietnamese soldier but belong to a French veteran, who turned Viet Minh (League for Vietnam's Independence) sympathiser.

At his residence in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, a small French city, 600 km southwest of Paris, which is now a Vietnamese restaurant, Albert Clavier, 77, was full of emotion showing his collection of Vietnam honours to VNA Paris-based journalists.

Albert Clavier, born into a family of "communist and workers tradition family" has a Vietnamese name: Ngo An. He used to be a soldier in the French expeditionary army during the Indochina war but changed his camp and joined the local Viet Minh resistant ranks, working for two years at the then Viet Minh's propaganda machine Voice of Vietnam.

"Viet Minh were brave and outstanding soldiers. I have a great admiration for them," Albert Clavier said.

Clavier, a member of the French Communist Party said he was twice convicted by military courts for his conscientious objection in 1945 before serving in the French artillery division. A year later, he served in the French expeditionary army in Vietnam, having fought in Saigon, Haiphong and Lang Son.

The year 1949 marked Clavier's turning point when the soldier became a sympathiser for Viet Minh and joined their ranks. "I could not stand the brutal acts by the French officers against their own soldiers, " he said adding that "Viet Minh were well organised. They had their men in the French secret service. Their commanders were well-mannered and educated".

Clavier said he felt the French forces committed a strategic error right as they decided parachuting in Dien Bien Phu, hoping for a set-piece battle with Viet Minh. Sau do HCM loai bo Quoc dan dang(voi vu an On Nhu Hau noi tieng), dong hoa cac phe khac va tu do chinh phu khong con la cua chung cac dang phai nua. Tren chien khu Viet bac, tuy ten Viet minh van con nhung khi do hoan toan duoi su lanh dao cua HCM. Vi vay, co the noi Chien thang DBP la cua toan dan nhung khong the noi la cua tat ca cac dang phai.
