Alternate street designs...?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Okay, here's an interesting two-pronged question: first something specific... once upon a time I had come across a book in the SFMOMA's bookstore that was in whole or in part on the subject of alternate urban visions for San Francicso. Details I remember were a proposed grand concourse for the Ferry Building, a system of wide boulevards laid over the existing streets, and an iron elevated thoroughfare (including helocopter landing pads) that followed the aproximate route of the Embarcadero... all these proposed by various persons in the early part of the 2oth century. Does anyone know the book I'm thinking of, or is it a product of my imagination? Secondly, does anyone know of any place on-line I might be able to find these sorts of things? Call me a nut, but I've suddenly gotten it into my head to envision an alternate San Francisco.

Thanks, jeff

Okay, I'm pretty sure after a little on-line research that one alternate version would have been Daniel Burnham's, so I guess the followup would be, does anyone know where I can find his plan for San Francicso?

" Visionary San Francisco" San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art 1990

The book was published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name in 1990.

I have a copy, bought at a over stock sale at the museum in 1991. Check usedbook stores all over town, they should have a copy, My copy is not for sale.
