As for the tales. Poe was runner up in a contest and had five tales published(1/14- 12/1 1832) "Metzengerstein", "The Duc de L'Omelette" "Loss of Breath" and "The Bargain Lost"(Bon bon) which Poe never gave evidence he knew of their publication. He republished newer versions of them later. "Metzengerstein" is decidedly classic Gothic in a European setting but with a psychological rational element that would see later reduction of the supernatural to nearly nothing.

Oops. The Philadelphia "Saturday Courier". Poe was beaten in the contest by Delia Bacon "Love's Martyr".
