Mabbott's "Edgar Allan Poe: Complete Poems"" does the historical perspective the best.Still in print too I believe. Your library might have free subscription databases where you can look up articles online iusing a password they may provide. That might help with some individual poems. Any biography or chronolgy might help with the basics.

THough his best poems were fantasies, stories or idealizations it does help to know some of the origins of their inspiration.

Mrs. Stanard's death "To Helen" His wife Virginia's death "Ulalume" "Annabel Lee"(which may or may not have been "intended" to represent that mourning)

The Valley of Unrest a dremascape inspired by his childhood visit to the Scottish Hebrides

Helen Whitman the second "To Helen" Poems directed to lady friends are easy too sport and less idealized.

His weak suicide drug overdose attempt and his recuperation with the help of Annie Richmond "To Annie".

"The Raven" is harder to tie in to fresh memories, but is a combination of past tragic losses and the ominous present sickness of his young wife.

"The Bells" was another post Virginia attempt to get on with his writing. it was helped along with the encouragement of a lady friend as they listened to nearby "irritating" Church bells. Poe greatly expanded that to a stages of life poem.
