surplus 8mm mauser 98k

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

I've seen a lot of 98k's for realtively little money (from $65 - $300/400). Does anyone know anything about the accuracy of these rifles? The 98k, from what I've read and understand, is a legendarily reliable and accurate rifle; the Rem 700 action is based off the 98k. And realizing that you get what you pay for, are the lesser expensive ones any good? What about upgrading or customizing them? Does anyone know of a gunsmith/company that does custom barrell, trigger, action jobs on them or sells better grade parts? Much Thanks! God Bless!

As for the difference in price the biggest difference you will se does not have anything to with accuracy. That is assuming that the barrel of the gun you buy is still in good shape. The biggest difference will be contained in whether you get matching serial numbers on the different parts and the condition of those parts. Now if you are looking for a gun that you are going to have as a collectors item that you want to look and shoot really good then try to find a Mauser that is upwards of the $200 range, however if you are just looking for a 98 that is going to function and shoot well then you can pick up a $90 98 and buy parts for anything that needs to be replaced if anything at all. Again teh majority of the price comes from conditions of cosmetic things like stock and any rust or pitting.

One thing I learned about the Germans is that they know how to make a rifle. The 98K's reliability and durability is legendary among shooters. My buddy's rifle is great to fire and pin point accurate. As far as parts go, the E-gunparts.com is about all I know. You'll love to shoot the 98K.
