DAYTON TENNESSEE OUTLAWS HOMOSEXUALITY

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

TO-day, in a sotry that will doubtless breaknationally, the cirty of Dayton Tennessee ( where I live now) has poutlawed Homosexuality. It has been declared a crime agksnt nature, and is now punishable, htough no detials are avaialble to me a the moment.

let us hope this small town, once home of the Famous Scpes trial, wll serve as an example for the future of the rest of the United States, and possibley the world.

Pray in thanks to God for this, and pray that we arent forced to overturn this law by the "Higher" courts.

If I am not mistaken the Supreme court has already ruled in such a way as to make such laws unconstitutional.

Response to DAYTON TENNESSEE POUTLAWS HOMOSEXUALITY

>Can anyone tell me the reason why gay persons do exist ??

Why do playboys exist?

Why do gamblers exist?

Why do alchololics exist?

Why do doctors exist?

Why do store clerks exist?

Why do priests and ministers exist?

Why do mom's and dad's exist?

Why do any of us exist?

To love and serve God is the answer. Unfortunately, the 'serve' part is not easy.

I wonder if outlawing this really should be our hope, even from the Christian perspective. Isn't outlawing homosexuality like making lying illegal, or lust? This is both a political and moral question I am posing. We are sinners, and we will sin. Is it our government's place to punish us if we are not hurting anyone? I think it is our government's place to grant its citizens limited freedoms, as long as they don't interfere with the freedoms of others. If the government outlaws homosexuality, it is determining morality for its citizens. What if it thinks Christianity is immoral? Let us be careful what we hope for. Please excuse my rambling (I haven't had much sleep and am somewhat incoherent). All this is just theory; I am not condeming anything previously posted, just giving my two cents' worth. Probelm is Christainity and Homosexuality are completley different. Ones a rleigion, the other is a sexual behaviour.

Sodomy WAS Illegal in the US for most of its history.

Besides that, religion and sexuality arent identical.

And i wrie this as I was excited over it becuase it was my own home town.

Your response does make a lot of sense. But, I was not suggesting that sexuality and religion were identical, just that both are defined by the moral code of the subject. I think we should be wary if the government begins to define that moral code for us. I do realize that sodomy is or was illegal in some parts of the US, and I am questioning whether or not it should be. Again, I am not trying to be antagonistic, I just have a tendency to play the devil's advocate in debates like these. Honestly, I would likely appreciate it if the filthy practice was prohibited everywhere.

Dayton really is a fascinating city, and I'm sure it was exciting to have a big event like that in your own town. I've actually been to Dayton before (I hail from Daytona Beach, FL) because I attended the Summit leadership conference at Bryan College last summer. If you are highschool or college age, I really recommend you attend Summit. You learn a lot about stuff like this.

Oh I understand. I just reject spuriosu logic.

Freedom of religion is however protected under the frist amendment. ( which is now abused to exclude religion, well at least in theory. Most rleigions are accepted in shcools however, just the ne of the Cross banned, btu I digress...)

Freedom o perverse behaviour is not protected. Thouhg I am neutral on sodomy laws themselves, I disagree wiht legilising Homosexual marriage and makign such practices legitimate.

However, Sodomy Laws where deisgned to protect peopel form abuses to themselves, as well as society form degeneration. One cannotmake this link with Religion.Unless siad rleigion has aspects htat demand things that are harmful to society, IE, Human sacrifice, which themselvs can be illegal. But a beelif system, and freeodm to hodl tjat, to assemble, and to worship, isnot harmful to society as seen by the law, therefore it is protected.

Thus, if you want to worhsip a rock, you are free to.

Well, you've got me on the religion/sexuality connection. However, the rest of my argument boils down to a difference of opinion as to the function of our government. You say there are laws to protect us from abusing ourselves and I take it that you think those laws should stand. I have not yet fully developed my opinions on law, but I would say that I think the government should simply protect us from others and protect others from us. In my opinion, what we do with to ourselves is our own business. (I am referring to the sodomy laws.) But again, that's just the way I think things should work, and I am yet young and unlearned.
