The common brands of AR-15's that you will encounter are "Colt","Bushmaster" & "Armalite". Depending on the configuration that you require- I.E.: carrying handle, flattop or some sort of raised optical platform- you should see retail prices range from $750 to $1000 dollars. With the above mentioned firearms you will acquire good barrels, possibly a two stage national match trigger and generally a forged receiver! If you get into their Varmint lines, they will generally offer all of these finer attributes! There are a few accessories you should avoid if you wish to make your new AR-15 shoot in all conditions! First, avoid muzzle breaks- they're too damn loud and not necessary. Two, chose a fast twist rate-say 1 in 9 or even better 1 in 8 if they offer it- this will allow you to shoot up to 80gr projectiles. Three, select a flat top or raised optical platform in lieu of any carrying handle models- they are much easier to mount rings and bases on! Ofcourse there are many other quality manufacturers of AR-15's, DPMS, Rock River, Wilson Combat to name a few... Also once you have purchased your AR keep in mind that you can mail order purchase any configuration of "upper" that you require- I.E.: 16" shorty in 223,9mm or 45acp! Also heavy barreled tacticals, fluted versions etc.. the sky is the limit! And you won't need a FFL to buy an upper! Even 22lr versions are now available- and they shoot well! An AR-15 is a great tool, it's Americas rifle and everybody should own one! Good luck w/ your purchase.mkh
