Poe Thesis

greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I'm doing a report and am having trouble coming up with a thesis statement. It needs to contain the writer, their most significant piece of work, and it's importance. Example: Thesis: Geoffrey Chaucer and "The Canterbury Tales" mocked the Roman Catholic Church's hierarchy. Only I need one for Edgar Allan Poe. If anyone has any ideas, please help me out. Thanks

having to make that value judgment may be an unfair approach. Poe's invention of the crime detective genre with "The Murders of the Rue Morgue", raising the Gothic to a new a new poetic height and the short story along with it(Tell Tale Heart, etc.). The first big American "hit" poem "The Raven", which despite there being no overt surpernatural event that could not be explained by the narrator's own treacherous mind was popularly perceived as a "scary" wonder. Poe's flops like his novel or his poettical csomological aestheics in "Eureka". or Poe's contributions to literary criticism such as his review of Hawthorne, his essays on poetry and art. Check out eapoe.org for all texts. Poe ran counter to the weighty philosophical writings of the Eastern states and wrote a lot of popular magazine work concentrating on short forms.

Poe satirized mocked and fought many of the dominant movements of the day but mostly in brief and in literary play. I am not sure what you are looking for.

Here is one that isn't very good, but it goes off your example (except it has Poe).

Edgar Allan Poe and his short prose "The Tale-Tell Heart" took literature of that era to a level where narratives were told from a more murderous point of view.
