Jackson issues her breast defence From correspondents in Los Angeles 03feb04

US MUSIC star Janet Jackson today apologised after Justin Timberlake exposed one of her breasts in front of nearly 100 million television viewers, CNN reported.

Jackson's mea culpa came amid snowballing public and official outrage in the United States after Timberlake ripped off her bodice at the end of their half-time performance at yesterday's football Super Bowl, baring her breast. "The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my half-time show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement broadcast by CNN.

"MTV was completely unaware of it.

"It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologise to anyone offended, including the audience, MTV, CBS, and the NFL (National Football League)."

CNN quoted Jackson spokesman Stephen Huvane as saying the incident "was a malfunction of the wardrobe. It was not intentional. ... He was supposed to pull away the bustier and leave the red-lace bra."

Timberlake and the show producers, MTV and CBS, apologised earlier and insisted it was an innocent "wardrobe malfunction" that caused Jackson's over-exposure during the country's most watched television event.

The whole show was improper for family entertainment. What happened at the end actually fit into the debauchery during the rest of the act. So, no, it was wrong and CBS should be found at fault by the FCC and fined heavily.

The whole idea was stupid in the first place, and even if it left her bra... SO WHAT?

Who wants their five year old football fan seeing that its okay to pull off womens clothing in front of 100 million people, shirt bra or anything. I would hope that there is a modicum of modesty left somewhere in this country.

Does anyone actually believe the 'wardrode' nonsense? I am not a woman, but ladys give me a hand here, do you often go out and sudden;y realise, "Ooops, I forgot my bra!" Come on! This was a conscience decision. If not by many people, then at least by Jackson.

The FCC board of governors have a lot to say on the topic. Looks like a crack down is coming.

Frankly the specific moment in the show that has generated so much publicity was no more offensive than most of the performance. I wonder if there would have been a similar outrage over the half naked performers, suggestive movements and lurid lyrics, even if the stupid "wardrobe malfunction" had not occurred? There should have been. The whole affair was a public celebration of the pagan, hedonistic, voyeuristic society in which we live, completely inappropriate for any audience, but especially one which was certain to include millions of impressionable children.

I think the really sad part is that there wasn't much outrage, at least among the people I work with. More of a cynical "eh, what you expect from those guys" attitude. It's a sad commentary that as a society it's getting harder and harder to really do something that is considered deviant.

From the daily barrage that is known as the "only in America file" comes the latest "storm in a D cup". YAWN. Titilation (sorry) disguished as moral outrage for the chattering middle classes. Get a life and if you really care about the world and man get active and do something positive and proactive about it. SOmething meaningful. Why not question the real causes for once rather than bemoan the results?

Hi Frank that wasnt directed at you or your workmates you must have just posted before me. :)

Paul M. Read the FCC site I referenced. The commissioners agree with you.

kiwi,

Maybe you didnt notice, but we ARE doing something about the situation. We are voicing discord. Sitting on our hands and not speaking out is what got this society to where it is. People complaining about how lewd things have become is the first step to other people listening and making their product less offensive...

Hi Paul buying into the "fear and consume cycle" is what got America and the rest of the "free world" into this mess. Criticise her immoral behaviour all you like I sorry to imply that you shouldnt, I just think its naive and that theres something much deeper and more serious, an underlying structual problem with our economies, (and yes advertising plays a big part it).It not only creates the oppourtunities for this sort of garbage but actualy demands it happen. Im not going to get on my left wing bandwagon but something is seriously wrong with our prioirites, maybe Im just a hypocritical dreamer cause I love to aquire consumer junk as well . Man always wants to improve himself apparently , its evolution as they say. ANyway Paul by all means play your part creating the "fear" and outrage and watch with dismay and confusion as others "consume" Janets outcoming albulm in the millions. Ignore the poor lady IMO, and while youre at it give your tv away, or better yet destroy it.

Kiwi,

Don't worry, I didn't think that was aimed at me. Here usually people are pretty blunt about their disagreements with you LOL! It does make sense that her behavior is a symptom of a systemic disease, and not the disease itself though, the question is how does one cure it?
