greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

I heard somewhere that Poe bred or owned a cat(s) that had 6 toes. does anyone know if this is true or any other interesting facts about Poe that aren't all over these pages already. Thanks

in answer to your question "the cat with 6 toes", it is totally true I am a decendant of Edgar Allen Poe and my cat also has 6 toes

I've never heard that fact anywhere. I don't believe he lived in one place long enough to own any pets. Let alone the fact that for the last decade of his life he spent it trying to feed his family (they resorted to stealing food at times).

Not to be rude or anything (honestly, its really curiousity), but I also don't remember hearing about Poe having children. His brother died at a young age and his sister went crazy and died shortly after Poe. Both siblings did not have children. So I wonder from what line are you a decendent from Poe?

I believe you are thinking about Ernest Hemmingway, not Poe. There are descendants of Hemmingway's 6-toed cats near where he lived in the Florida keys.

I have a Hemingway kitty (polydactyl) who has 6 toes on his front paws and 5 on his back paws. These cats are decended from the cats in Key West that supposedly belonged to Ernest Hemingway. Many of the kitties live at the Hemingway House there. It is a genetic defect that is responsible for the extra toe and my cat's dad has 7 toes on his front paws. He looks like a little boxer with gloves on. They are really sweet cats and many owners believe they bring good luck to their owners.

Polydactal kitties.... Could I see a picture or two of a few of them? Please? I'm interested in genetics, but i think that Evolution is all ****ed up. I also would like to know what people think the outcome of breeding Rott Weilers, Greyhounds, Great Danes, and (possibly) German Shepherds. I'm only 13 right now, so i probably wont try to breed dogs in the immediate future.

There was a man in the Bible who had 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot. His name was Lahmi, and he was the brother of Goliath, the giant. I also find it slightly odd though, that Goliath was only about 8 or 9 feet tall, and still the Giants were considered Giants, Although that is about TWICE the hight of the Israelites of the time. I'm not sure if Goliath also had 6 digits on each limb like his brother, or if anyone else in his family did, either. ....
