The begining of Alone talks about how his childhood was not the same as everyone elses. The poem, in my estimation, is a work dedicated to the loss of loved ones he often encounters in his life. Remember, both of his parents died when he was young, and, as is stated by others, he lost a friend and a wife just before writing this work. The theme then seems to be that his life seems targeted by God to be cursed with the loss of anyone he gets close to.
