What was going on in Poe's Life in 1844 when Poe wrote The Raven?

His only wife, Virginia, was dying from tuberculosis (she may have already died, I'm not sure on the date). He was suffering from poverty, slight addictions to opium and alcohol. Virgina, her mother, and Poe were all dealing with daily struggle for warmth, food and drink.
