Hello,

Has anyone compiled a list of issue dates for the ACL & SAL public timetables from 1900 - 1967? They put out so many seasonal issues in the 30s-40s that it is hard to keep up with the early years. I especially need the 1960-1967 to help complete my collection.

This is possibly off topic, but I have a public timetable from the original Norfolk Southern Railroad corrected to September 1, 1927. Sleeping car service was still available from Raleigh to Norfolk and from Newbern, N.C. to Norfolk. Sleeping cars were operated between Pinehurst, N.C. to New York in conjunction with the Seaboard Airline for the golfing crowd. Also sleeping car service between Newbewrn, Kinston, and Goldsboro, N.C. and New York via the A&NC Railroad which was operated by the Norfolk Southern by lease arrangement. Connections were made with ACL trains at Goldsboro, as well as with trains of the Southern Railway. Betcha' most of you thought the ACL and the SAL were the only two railroads in Eastern Carolina that offered sleeping car service. Such was not the case.

In the case of the ACL, they issued three passenger timetables a year from 1949 to 1966, April, Sept. & Dec. '49-'54, and April, Oct. & Dec. thereafter. There were additionals, June '53, June '55, June '57 and June '66 and the last seperate ACL, April '67. All ACL system timetables had a purple cover except 3 or 4 issues in early 1937 that had gold covers for the 50th Anniv. of the Florida Special. The purple was derived from the covers of predecessor PLANT SYSTEM timetables and is the reason that ACL diesels were originally purple. Hope the above will help.

The National Assoc. of Timetable Collectors has issued lists of each railroad's passenger timetables. These are available from the Assoc. in the form of books covering portions of the alphabetical list of companies at $15 a volume. Vol.7, the latest published, contains Q, R & S. Years ago a list of an individual company was available for either a stamp or a nominal copying fee. Don't know if that's still the case. Try their web site:
