The Mystery Story---Poe invented the genre in 1841. (About 40 years before the 1st Sherlock Holmes stories appeared.)Both Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Alfred Hitchcock credited his influence.Science fiction-- pioneered several forms of the genre. Jules Verne acknowledged Poe's influence.
The modern short story--often credited with inventing it. Poe was the first to discuss the "unity of effect." That is, everything in a story (or poem) should focus on a single effect.
Poe's focus on dreams, or on creating a mood, were to later inspire the Symbolist poets, the Impressionists and the Surrealists.
