Well his father deserted his mother and and his bros and sis, then his mom died of tuberculosis. He was taken in by the Allans where he was spoilt by his mother... so it was kind of a so-so thing.

Poe's REAL parents didn't really have a major impact on his life. His father left his mother at a really early age (it's not sure when, the idea is BEFORE he was even born). His mother died when he was around 18 months old from tuberculosis (at least that is the common belief). His foster parents, the Allan's never officially adopted him - but in all respects, they offered him a decent childhood. His foster mother, treated him as her own - and it is she who he calls mother. His foster father and Edgar never really got along - when Mrs. Allan was dying she made Mr. Allan promise to give him a good life. He did for a while, but Edgars gambling debts at his school caused him to stop funding for school or housing. That's basically where Poe had to take over his own life.

His real parents didn't have much of an effect on his life. He was taken in by the Allans and then when he was sent to private schools in the 1820's. I don't think he ever saw his Dad.

I recently watched a documentary on Poe's life. It had stated that his biological mother died just before Poe had turned 4. He pretty much sat and watched his mom die. Being as young as he was I almost believe that the only thing that he really remembered (if anything) about his mother was her sickness. In "The Masque of the Red Death" it is believed by quiet a few people, Poe describes his mother's illness. Maybe the "red death" was a mere symbol of the things that he had witnessed. Tuberculosis causes one to cough up blood, therefore ending in a "red death".

Actually, Poe never knew his father, at least his biological one, so his foster father was really the only image of one he had. I think he had a good childhood growing up, but as soon as the gambling started, it all went downhill.

I could never find his fathers name but his mother, Elizabeth Arnold, passed away when he was very young and he was adopted by a guy named John Allen. I couldn't find his adopted mothers name either. This guy,John, didn't have any children so he took in Poe and spent tons an his education. Man I would like to have parents like that, just kidding!!

Both Poe's mother and father were actors. I'm not entirely sure of the source, but from what I've read, it seems Poe himself believed he inherited his talent for public speaking and oratory performances from them.
