Edgar Allan Poe's importance on the USA is basically what he brought into the Romanticism era. The era was mostly about writers connecting with chaos and human emotion, rather than fact or logic. Poe, a writer in his own league, focused on the murderous parts of humanity. He took the darker side of reality and displayed it on a very human level, in some sense he knew that it is the darkest realms of reality in which most people are attached too.

He used deaths of beautiful women, murderous servants, tales where the narrator usually is to some degree insane - and put it in a light of art. The reason why it is art, is mainly because Poe took these dark aspects and viewed it in reverse, example: think ANNABEL LEE, the poet was having trouble dealing with the loss of Annabel Lee, she was having TROUBLE dying merely because the poet REFUSED to just let her death be.

So in short, you can say Poe's impact on American writing was the fact he introduced darkness with a lovable attachment. He changed the way people saw death, love, even immortality.
