Song is an early poem perhaps referring directly to his jilting by Elmira Royster. This might be paried with the tale "The Assignation" in that regard, that both loved each other but that their letters were withheld by Elmira's father while they were separated. Poe returned to find her engaged and soon married. So the poem implies Poe and Elmira sharinga gaze across that gulf, and the meaning of that blush that came over the bride. It is a great subtle back and forth sonnet. His gaze, her eyes. Her blush, his flame. The last stanza then reprises the first with more meaning.
