I wishg there were more revies of his poems. Poecentral used to be a good source. Thomas Mabbott has good background commentary in "Complete Poems", still in print.

In that he claims this early poem(with ideas and imagery later taken up in "Ulalume") is a reply to Thomas moore's poem with the moon a friendly light and the brighter stars "cold and far". For Poe it was just the opposite. The lone and far evening star, more akin to his own nature, is tyrannized by the blanketing light of the moon until a cloud(shroud) dims its cold glow. Poe comments on the cold moon in other poems.

Poe reviewed Moore's "Irish melodies" of which the poem here mentioned is "While Gazing on the Moon's Light", available, I think, online as is Poe's review(www.eapoe.org). Poe used the reply form in other poems to differ with Byron or Moore.
