How do YOU spell the main character from Dragonball/Z 's first name?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Community Anime Reviews : One Thread

Random Thought--Why does it seem like I'm the only one I know who spells it "Gokou", or anything other than "Goku", for that matter?! In true Japanese translation (The Kanji of Gokou's name has Furugana above it like Kanji often does, which is regular Japanese Katakana/Hiragana for people that can't read Kanji (LIKE ME!) if you didn't know) is So-N Go-Ku-U, with 2 U's. In the dub version it's Goku, and they say "GOku", witgh the emphasis on the "Go". In Japanese the 2 "U"'s make it pronouced "GoKUU", emphasizing the "Kuu". But the Japanese are kinda retarted when it comes to writing English (Can you blame them? English is the most screwed up language there is, besides German!), so whenever then write his name on toys or clothes or cards and stuff they write "Gokou". In Japanese that would be said "Go-Ko-Oh", but it's like how we spell words like "you". And some people, though rarely that I've ever seen, write it "Gokuh". Back in the day when I only knew the EARLY Ocean Group dubbed stuff I would write Goku. I always went online and saw people spelling it wierd. I didn't see the difference but I thought Gokuu and Gokuh looks goofy, but Gokou looked cool. Ever since then I've been writing it like that, even after I got into the Japanese version and realized this was wrong. Vegetto EX once said that spelling it "Gokou" was totally wrong, as I said it would be said "Go-Ko-Oh" in Japanese. But since the Japanese spell it like that it IS technically a way to spell his name. All I know is that seemingly everyone else writes it Goku, probably because it is the simplest or something. I've rarely seen anyone use other ways--And most commonly after Goku I see it my way of Gokou. When people are romanizing the Japanese lyrics and other stuff they use Gokuu, but it's usually Goku. Thank you for letting me waste your time...Sorry, I do that a lot, ne? Well everyone? How do YOU spell it?

Gokoo pronounced: Naruto is a better anime!

-- adg (asdf@adsg.adsg), January 12, 2004.

I think its spelled Goku, because Gokou in Japanese is just like you said, it would be pronounced Go-ko-oh. the OU is pronounced OH

-- Trinity (darkpanchan666@yahoo.com), January 12, 2004.

You misunderstand. It's OFFICIALLY in Japanese Hiragana Go-Ku-U, or Gokuu. I was asking how individuals spell it--Goku, Gokou, Gokuu, or Gokuh. I've NEVER seen Gokoo, and it's totally 100% incorrect. It's like Gokou is "Go Ko Oh", only I have the excuse as the Japanese themselves mistakingly write Gokou, so it IS an official way to spell it. So I assume you spell it Goku? Most people do.

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 13, 2004.

I spell it Goku 'cause yeah..can't be bothered spelling it Gokou or anything....=P

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), January 14, 2004.

"Bothered"? Hm. It's one extra letter and for me at least it's as automatic as writing Vegeta or even Amakakeru Ryuu no Hirameki (Kenshin's strongest attack in Rurouni Kenshin...Never mind, you guys don't watch it right?). But yeah, most people write it Goku, often to avoid confusion. Goku. Goku.

...

I DID have to think when I wrote that, and all three times I wrote Gokou and had to go back and fix it!!!!! Dammit!!!!!!!!!

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 14, 2004.

His real name can be spell like : Son Goku

-- TheKayanWan (devilastaroth@hotmail.com), January 14, 2004.

Yeah, it's one extra letter, but I would have to think before I wrote it..'cause I usually just write "Goku" not "Gokou" or anything!

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), January 15, 2004.

Son is the LAST name, as last names come first in Japanese. And yes, I ESTABLISHED that Goku is a spelling. I was ASKING, for the 15th time, how INDIVIDUALS chose to spell it. Nobody calls him Son Gokou every single damn time they talk about him!!!!!!!!! AngelGoten, do they ever give him a last name in the dub?

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 16, 2004.

Dont watch DBZ its a waste of time, watch Cowboy bebop / Naruto / and Gundam wing.

-- flip387 (flip387@yahoo.com), January 17, 2004.

I guess they give him a last name...i just assume Son's the last name in the dub as well!! But I HATE Trunksies last name *shudders* as IF you would!!

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), January 18, 2004.

goku,vegeta,trunks,goten.........

-- red suns srotary (tripoidx3gundam@hotmail.com), January 19, 2004.

JUST GOKOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damn, why don't you people read the ENTIRE post before responding?! And Dragonball ain't a waste of time--ENGLISH Dragonball is, but yeah...Narutou's OK...The next best Anime after Dragonball is a tie between Inu Yasha and Flame of Recca. But I've only read Vol. 1-3 of the Recca Manga and seen a liiiiiiiiiittle bit of the Anime, and I've seen quite a bit of Inu Yasha. So yeah...But don't call DB/DBZ a waste of time--People have different tastes in Anime, and I prefer Shounen, particularly Dragonball.

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 20, 2004.

I spell Goku, goku and Vegita, Vegita/Vegeta.

-- )v(ajin\/egita (Info@smserve.co.za), January 20, 2004.

I spell Goku as Goku and Vegeta as Vegeta or sometimes Vegita. And Trunks has the worst last name of all time "Trunks Vegeta Briefs" if you must be official. At least Goten is just Goten or Goten Son (or is it Son Goten? They put the last name first in Japanese right?)Hell if I know! Kawaii Chibis, YAY!

-Yonk

-- Yonk (TrunksandGoten@ChibisareKawaii.chibis), January 21, 2004.

Son Gokou, Son Gohan, Son Goten. Last names are first in Japanese, so yeah in English it's Gokou Son, etc. But it sounds wierd to me...I'm used to Son Gokou. I do they same thing with certain singers-Ex. I call Kageyama Hironobu because that's how I got used to it, but Hironobu is his FIRST name. But for Rika Matsumoto, the woman who sings for Pocket Monsters and is Satoshi's voice, Rika is her first name. Go figure, I just do it like that. But why "Trunks Vegeta Briefs"? Since Saiyajin don't appear to have last names he'd just be Trunks Briefs. And Vegeta would be Vegeta Briefs, despite that he may feel a blow to his pride for taking his wife's last name!

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 21, 2004.

Avtually since Vegeta is from the "Vegeta" bloodline wouldn't he be Vegeta Vegeta or Vegeta Briefs Vegeta?

-Yonk

-- Yonk (trunksandGoten@ChibisareKawaii.chibis), January 21, 2004.

Vegeta Briefs Vegeta?? Would that be his name? What a weird name! I think I'll just stick to calling him Vegeta for now..

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), January 22, 2004.

Did saiyans even have last names???

-- )v(ajin\/egita (Info@smserve.co.za), January 22, 2004.

THat's my point. Saiyajin don't have last names so Vegeta would have to be Vegeta Briefs or just Vegeta. His dad was Vegeta Ou, King Vegeta, and he was like Vegeta Jr. Only to complicate matters further the last episode of GT introduces Vegeta Jr, so we don't count GT. It's like if there was some guy, uh...Bob Johnson. He names his son Bob also. And that Bob's son is Bob, and his son is Bob, and let's say that goes for 5 generations. Is their family name Bob? No. It's just a long line of naming your kids after you. In that case they usually call the child Junior though his real name would be Bob on his birth certificate, or if you wanna be really techincal Bob the Fifth or whatever. So we don't know how many Vegeta's came before Vegeta Ou if any, but Vegeta's family name is not Vegeta. With no last names, he would either be just plain Vegeta (Kinda like Cher), or Vegeta Briefs. He is of the Briefs family so I'd say Vegeta Briefs. But nonetheless, Vegeta is his first name only, and not family name. That actually made sense to me...Anyone else get it?

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 22, 2004.

Yeah, I got it. Its like me. I'm about the 5th person ina row in my family that has the same first two names.

-- )v(ain\/egita (Info@smserve.co.za), January 22, 2004.

Ummm...I'm not sure Vegeta would want to be "Briefs" considering that that is Bulma's family name so maybe just Vegeta will suffice. And wouldn't it have been confusing if Vegeta had named Trunks Vegeta as well? I can just imagine the fanfiction:

Vegeta: "Hey brat, where's your better form?"

Vegeta: "I dunno, I'm goin' to Goten's house!"

Vegeta: "Hey Vegeta, hey dad."

Vegeta: "When did you get here."

Vegeta: "I just came, sorry it's been a while, my Time Machine wasn't working."

Vegeta: "Well then, to the gravity room!"

Vegeta: "I'm still goin' to Goten's!!!"

See? Confusing.

-Yonk

-- Yonk (TrunksandGoten@ChibisareKawaii.chibis), January 22, 2004.

O_o" Confusing! Just imagine if I was named Goten too!!

Goten: Heya Goten!

Goten: GOTENNY!! HEYA GOTENNY! YAY!!

Goten: Umm..yeah..

GOTEN: GOTENNNYYYYY!

Yeah, that would be confusing!!! Weird psycho stalker Goten and normal kawaii Goten!!

Who really cares? If you want to blame someone blame the translators.

-- Pearson (none@aol.com), January 26, 2004.

Well, thats what she is doing. By blaming Funimation for their crap job (which I dissagree upon), isnt she actually blaming the translators????

-- )v(ajin\/egita (Info@smserve.co.za), January 27, 2004.

Steven J. Simmons is the translator and provides FUNi with subtitles. He's kick-ass. I blame the scrpit-writers, who take the translation and "spice it up", if you will, and turn it into the shit we see on Cartoon Netwrok's DBZ. But I've said it before and I'll say it again-Now that Dragonball's almost reached it's end at the evil hands of FUNimation, there's not too much to gripe about. After FUNi is long forgotten, I won't forget DBZ, cuz I don't like FUNi. My main problem is their shit idea for music. Ja!

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), January 27, 2004.

Man, this is very funny. The whole time people are trying to figure out Goku's real name. But most of the people on the web call him GOKU.OKAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!And then there is a conflict on Goku's last name but the stupid Funimation dubb writer never put a last name because Goku came from planet Vegita(I don't know is I spell the planet rigth but it is NOT A BIG DEAL!!!!)And the whole thing was about find out about Goku's name. ha ha ha!!!!Will anyone know?

-- mercurystar_2 (mercurystar_2@hotmail.com), February 10, 2004.

Slow down...What do you mean? I don't know about the dub but in the Japanese version everyone knows his last name is Son. Once again I'll say this--I AM REFFERING TO OPINIONAL PREFFERENCE ON THE SPELLING OF HIS FIRST NAME. Yeah, most people just say "Goku". I really wanted to post this originally to see if anyone spelled it anything other than "Goku", like me who writes Gokou all the time, or the correct Japanese way of Gokuu, or the wierd looking random Gokuh. So let's get this clear ONE MORE TIME:

IS THERE ANYONE WHO DOES *NOT* SPELL HIS NAME "GOKU"?! AND IF SO, WHICH DO YOU PREFER TO USE?!

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), February 11, 2004.

Bloody idiot that doesnt reaf the first post carefully.

-- )v(ajin\/egita (Info@smserve.co.za), February 12, 2004.

Dumb freak

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), February 23, 2004.

OK OK it was a stupid response, but no need to continue with insults, AngelGoten. Mine was enough, and even Majin Vegita's, but "dumb freak" was kinda uncalled for.

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), February 23, 2004.

Yeah...

-- ~*AngelGoten*~ (angelgoten@hotmail.com), February 25, 2004.

Well, being a Vegeta fan, I've always spelt it Kakarotto :=P

-- Rissa of the Saiya-jin (rissaofthesaiyajin@yahoo.com), March 17, 2004.

Hahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!! I've never heard of anyone exclusively calling him Kakarotto!!!!!! Very interesting. When talking in Vegeta's point of view I'll say it (Ex. And I bet Vegeta was thinking that Kakarotto was just a dumb asshole or something), but that's pretty much it. Cool! There was a phase for about a year when I was calling him Son-kun all the time, but since my friends are ridiculous dub watchers they were always like "Who?" so I went back to saying Gokou.

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), March 18, 2004.

The japanese name is son the english name is GOKU there is no fucking o

-- Jeremy Brandelik (CodenameSimpson@yahoo.com), March 28, 2004.

Um ACTUALLY you shit faced cock master, there CAN BE an o, and it is explained WHY if you read my first post, asshole. In Japanese the TRUE form of spelling it is SON (that's his LAST fucking name) GOKUU, with two u's. The English version made it Goku, but when the Japanese wrote his name in ENGLISH LETTERS, on like T-Shirts, video games (See Budoukai's Japanese version, even), action figures, etc, they wrote it GOKOU, as in English the -ou is sometimes pronounced OO, like the word "you". I was asking for personal choices of spelling so if you don't like it GET THE FUCK OFF OF MY FORUM!!!!!!!

-- Suupaa Gohan 2 (dragonballz@aol.com), March 29, 2004.

lol

-- ..how did i get here O . o?? (fdsa@hotmail.com), June 04, 2004.

Son is not a last name... it's a polite suffix that comes before Goku's, Gohan's, and Goten's name, like saying Vegeta-kun, or Vegeta- sama. Gokou would not be pronounced Go-Ko-Oh, it would be pronounced Go-ko=oo (a=ah i=ee u=oo e=a o=oh) you can not say I am wrong because my daddy served a mission in Japan, and I have four different Japanese dictionaries. So nya

-- Jessica Marie Jamison (Cutybatcat@aol.com), June 12, 2004.

The correct form are Gokuu and Gokuh. The original phonetic says: GoKU, then are the two forms i said. GoKOOH and GOku are incorrects and the first one sounds stupid.

-- Son Gokuh (kakarotto@usuarios.retecal.es), June 12, 2004.

jessica is wrong and right. But she is more right than wrong. Son is a PREFIX. as used in japanese usually of respect like -sama, -kun, -chan, etc.

oh and none of you can tell me im wrong because i study japanese and most of my friends do and one of my best friends IS japanese.
