One might say the invention of the mystery story, a synthesis of the gothic with crime fiction centers of Poe trying to resolve his own nature, the supremely genius rationalist with heightened poetic perceptions and the man struggling with demons and forces beyond his immediate control. His works may be found at www.eapoe.org including the four detective stories "The Murders of the Rue Morgue" "The Gold Bug" "The Purloined Letter" and "the Mystery of Marie Roget".
