I have a BSA cats eye, 6x24 40 on a FA91, (H&K G3 clone). I have had not problems with it. However, I have not shot passed 200 yards.

From what I have heard of BSAs, they are decently reliable and do well for the money, but don't focus as clearly as higher dollar scopes. Ya pay $100 for a scope, ya get a $100 scope. Hope this helps. Happy shootin' to your son!
