caliber of Smith Corona Model 03A3

I received this rifle as a Christmas gift and my Step-father didn't know what caliber that it takes. He said it should be a 30-06 or a 270. Does any one know what caliber this rifle takes?

Your rifle is a WW2 vintage 1903. As I cannot see your rifle I can only assume that it has not been altered or rebarreled. If it is as original you should be able to see the armory stamping on top of the barrel somewhat down from the front sight. It will have a month # - year#. You are a lucky person as S/C 03's are the more sought after by collectors. In any event it will be chambered in .30-06. However for safety reasons and the age of this excellant rifle I highly recommend that you have the rifle looked over by a competent gunsmith to check condition and headspace before actually enjoying your little treasure.
