Generally, Poe very much was involved with dishing it out, resentm, ent against shoddy tyrants in literature and publishing, payback. Although it could be playful it bespoke a deep abiding anger and insecurity that did not take insult as well as he could heap it on others. Impossible to get too particular or identify real targets in these stories, Thomas Dunn English or the New England establishment notwithstanding, but certainly the dark entertainment value of socking it to your wrongdoing inferiors underlies this and other tales.
