Poe showed up deathly sick after goin missing a few days when he was supposed to be on a boat home. The nature of those missing days and the exact diagnosis of his illness are open to speculation. The rabies theory is an interesting theory according to the symptoms. Poe's prior medical stress from drinking and poverty and tragedies was a contributing factor although he was very athletic as well and did not catch tuberculosis from his wife and survived a laudanum overdose. At www.eapoe.org the mystery of the missing days is examined. Clues point to the possibility Poe had been shanghaied and plied with drink for a forced vote fraud gang in the local Baltimore election. The state of his clothes points to that. The "last words" and other reporting by witnesses, especially Dr. Moran the doctor, are unreliable at times. Some dispute that rabies is not a good a diagnosis as that of signs of lifelong alcohol abuse but the arguments at least are sound. Poe liked cats.

Hey Casey,

You are not the only one who doesn't know how he REALLY died. I have been searching for the answer for about a year now. No one, no one (!) knows for sure. I have seen about 50 different possiblities and I don't believe one. No offense, but the possibility that he was bitten by his own dog?, I don't believe one bit.

I'll keep in touch with you if I find something.

Poe had a very mysterious death. He was not popular in the United States. He arrived in Bultimore Maryland very ill. He went missing and was found in a gutter with clothing not recognized as his own and alcohol on his breath, though he was never a heavy drinker.

Hmmm yes. Edgar A. Poe's death was quite mysterious indeed. It was true that poe was not liked much by the american green coats. so when he flew into maryland, via helicoptor, visa V concordinently. the green coats got together and ploted a murder against poe. he was beated to death by tree branches. it was quite gorry. i have pictures.

It is true that when Poe flew in by helicopter the green coats beat him to death, but not because they didn't like him. It was very early in the morning and the dam helicopter woke them up so they had to take it out on someone. And that's how and why he died.

You're not going to find a real answer for how Poe died, since it was an unsolved death. The most obvious cause is probably a laudenum (opium and alcohol mixture, used mostly as a medicine in the mid 1800's) related incident such as drinking too much of it I guess. But don't hurt yourself searching for an answer since you won't find it. If you do find something, remember, it's only speculation.

He was raped by a fat black guy and then beat to death.

A 350 puond Black male raped Poe and then beat him to death.

Edgar Allen Poe died of rabies. I have read numorous paragraphs and lost stories of his death, and the fact that a number of doctors belive rabies was the cause of his death.

The story of The Black Cat starts with the narrator who is the main character. He his shown as loving to his wife, very kind and gentle. But then he descends into a downward spiral once he ‘grew day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others.’ In his irritableness, he gauges out the eye his very own cat that was so beloved to him in a fiendish act. There is an evident sign that something is wrong. The cat soon learns to flea for the man. But the cat can only run so far and is caught by the man and then hanged. Only a few nights later his house caches on fire, when he goes to see the ruins an impression of the hanging cat is on the walls. He goes out in a drunken rage soon thereafter and sees another cat with white patch on its chest catches the narrators eye. So he takes the cat home. But slowly the patch of fur resembles the hanging cat. The uncontrollable rage toward the cat causes the man to kill this cat as well. But as he is swinging the axe, his wife steps in front and she is killed instead. In a panic he hides the wife in the basement and builds a brick wall the conceal her. But unknowingly he also buries the cat behind the wall. Soon the authorities become suspicious. The law enforcement investigates the house many times. They come for a final inspection of the house, but find nothing. Just before the begin to leave, the cat cries for the police. ‘No sooner had the reverberation of my blows sunk into silence than I was answered by a voice from within the tomb! –by a cry, at first muffled and broken, like the sobbing of a child, and then quickly swelling into one long, loud, and continuous scream…’ Down to the basement they went and found the wall. The wall was destroyed and the woman was found along with he black cat.

Sorry but the real truth is that Mr. Edgar Allen Poe died from TB. He didn't get raped or get rabies. Mr. Poe was a very great poet and all of his work should be taken to heart. You shall only speak the truth of Poe. He was and still is a very respected poet. So show respect!!!!

I do not believe that Poe had rabies. Someone would have seen signs of it SOMETIME before his death.

-- Anonymous, April 22, 2004

The truth may never be known, and you cant trust the doctor's from then because they did not have the technology to diagnose accurately

he was gay. gay gay gay!

-- Anonymous, May 27, 2004

death usualy occurs 3 days - 2 weeks (with supportive treatment) once "signs of rabies" appear.. NO WAY anyone could have seen signs of it "sometime" before his death. The symptoms match that of rabies not alchohalism

the death of him is unknown to this day. he probably killed himself, something to do with alcohol or soemthing like that but he didn't get rabies....thats just completely stupid

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2005

Um No one REALLY knows, Do they ?some people have gone as far as saying he was not in fact an alcoholic but he was allergic to it. But that seem to be the only thing (alcohol) contestant in his history told by others. No one knows for sure how he died but I do know it was not this: “ Poe was not a drinker the first time he drank he died , it was because he was allergic to alcohol” I don’t believe that at all if so then everything they have taught in school is wrong !

-- Anonymous, January 20, 2005

screw anyone that thinks poe is gay!!

-- Anonymous, January 24, 2005

I think that Poe really did have rabies. He had many cats and one of them probably bite him. The Technology back then was very unstable, so that is why his death remains uncertain.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2005

Did you hear about that hooded guy who comes to his grave every year? He leaves a rose on it and a bottle of alcohal- maybe he has something to do with Poe's death

-- Anonymous, February 10, 2005

All the symptoms prouve that he actually did die from Rabbies. In the early 1900's a doctor dug up his grave to do tests on the body to see how he actually died and to cover up for the whole thing vandalized the grave so it just looked like some punks came and vandalized it. But he did not announce it to the public and recently a doctor was 100% sure that he had rabbies and dug up the grave to prouve it and the test were positive. He was so sure because he had read the reports made by the other doctor in the 1900's.

-- Anonymous, February 14, 2005

Okay, he didnt die of rabies and no ones nose poked him and he didnt suck your dick or die from farting. He was walking along the Baltimore Waterfront while a few vampires jumped out and attacked him. that explains the bit marks, and the "rabies like symptoms", his body couldnt handle the virus so he died of exhaustion.

-- Anonymous, February 21, 2005

All ya'll crazy on here. The man died of brain congestion. So shut up!!!!!!

-- Anonymous, February 22, 2005

no one knows what he died from but im wrighting a paper about the ways people thank he did so please yall i need yalls help

-- Anonymous, February 22, 2005

I believe Sara on the fact that he was probably attacked by some sort of vampire or blood-sucking human. Though many do not believe in the "vampire myth", I'm not ruling it completely out of the question. Take a look for a minute at the facts... he went missing for a few days, he turned up at the Baltimore waterfront in an almost death-like condition with mysterious bite marks on his body, where he was then comitted to a hospital and euthanized. And still to this day, no one knows, or at least no one wants to tell, how he died. Either the doctors at the hospital really DON'T know how he became like this, or they don't want US to know. The rabies thing is a very good excuse, but I don't buy it completely. I think that he was attacked by a vampiric creature and no one wants to admit it yet.

I dont have a truthful answer but i COULD assume he just drank himself to death, i cannot explain why he was not wearing his clothes....you do many stupid thinds when drunk i guess. but what were his last words? my Eng. Lit. teacher said something about how his last words were really creepy or something....

-- Anonymous, March 06, 2005

edgar allen poe was a great man, but his death is shrouded in controversy. no one knows how he REALLY died, but it is said that he drowned himself in alcohol. also, people believe that he DID in fact develop rabies, but then there is the thought of "didnt anyone see the signs?" well noone will really know hoiw he died, lets just say it was an "unnatural" death

-- Anonymous, March 07, 2005

Did they even know what rabies signs were back then?
