.223 ammo suggestionsgreenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread |
I`m shooting a savage 112 .223 long action with 26 inch heavy barrel. Will shoot shoot 1/2 moa with winchester 45 gr. jacketed hollow points. I have hit prairie dogs at 400 yards with this combo. In windy conditions this ammo is terrible. I want to go with a heavier bullet to get a higher ballistic coefficent. I know I will have to sacrifice muzzle velocity but If I want to extend my range beyond 400 yards I think i`m better off with the heavier bullet. I`m thinking of trying the black hills 75 Gr. match hollow points. I don`t reload and I`m on a budget so I don`t want to spend money on shitty ammo. Any opinions or reccomendations will be appreciated. Thank you.

From what I get off savage arms website is that all the rifles chambered for the .223 come with a 1 in 9 twist. Is this correct?

The Savage 112 Long Action is a 1 in 12 twist and I have always had super luck with the Nosler, Hornady or Sierra 50 BT / V max and 25 or 25.5 grains of H335 with a Remington 7 1/2 or Federal Bench Rest Small primer. 27.0 Grains of 748 does the same thing. However, you're using more powder per case with the 748 as opposed to the 335.Please note that I have found that the Federal Primer is a little larger in diameter than the Remington primer and thus will give you a tighter fit in said primer pocket. No joke.

Gosh but I am a fan of those fine Savage Rifles. Great shooters. I P-dawg hunt about 20 days a year and have used various Savage rifles including those chambered for .223. If I may give a suggestion: before going out and spending $50 on a box of the fine Black Hills ammo, check your barrel twist rate for your rifle in the manual that it came with. If its less than a 1 in 9 twist rate, you are going to have trouble with accuracy when using the heavy bullet weights. The Savage 110FP in .223 that I shoot regularly will not hit a building from the inside with anything heavier than a 62 gr. Projectile. When the wind kicks up I have to take a beer break for the rest of the day, or pull out another riffle (my Savage 10FP in .308W) that digests heavier ammo.Good luck & Happy doggin, CMP

Try Black Hills ammo.
