I believe that there is a distinct difference between being "insane" and mad. I most certainly believe that Poe was mad, but not insane. Insane draws upon the idea that he was unmanagable, and by his works that is obviously not true. Being "mad", I believe, is being driven into creative unimaginable worlds that just can't be seen by the average outsider.
