I am wondering if anyone knows the history behind naming Hawthorne Street( between Howard and Folsom) in San Francosco.

Good Question.

Hawthorne is the name of a public elementary school and it is generally supposed that the honor goes to Nathaniel.

What we do know is that Hawthorne Street was Hubbard street up to around 1900. Seems unlikely that Nathaniel was the inspiration for that change.

One only local angel seems to be Hawthorne Furniture Company (1923) on New Montgomery. If they had a warehouse or perhaps started out on nearby Hubbard, that might account for the name. No record of such a warehouse.

Good luck in your research.
