It has been suggested that this poem may refer to "Elmira Royster" who was Poe's childhood sweetheart, but as her parents disaproved of her relationship with Poe, they arranged for her to marry the much older and wealthy "Alexander Barret Shelton" while Poe was away at the University of Virgina in 1826. The Poem has a assumed narrative story behind it. the underlying theme of the poem is to emphasize the beauty of a bridal day showing a contrast between the beauty of the day and the bride's inner struggle of marrying someone other than the man she really loves.
