Can anyone identify a classic/key experiment with lines, a group of students in on the gag who swore the lines were what they obviously weren't ... to do with social pressures and conformity? Thanks

Try the following:

Asch, S. E., (1951). Effects of Group Pressure Upon the Modification and Distortion of Judgements. In H. Guetzkow (Ed.),_Groups, Leadership, and Men_.

Asch, Solomon E. (1961) Social psychology. Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall. (I think there might be a 1958 edition of this book as well.)_
