If your teacher is that dense why not try out your own work for laughs? If he isn't, you are screwed. Try Poe's own essay on Hawthorne at www.eapoe.org. Note the differences in their short stories, the restrained Gothic, the lessons, the characterizations and allegories in Hawthorne that are not Poe's cup of tea and the wild poetry and fantasy which hawthorne avoided. Also Hawthorne got HIS governemnt job to aid his writing while Poe did not. Hawthorne was no personal; enthusiast of Emerson and would sneak out the back window on occasion when that lion of the North came up the walk. Both men have a sense of humor one might suspect at first glance at their writings. Hawthorne may have avoided the world of the essayists (Poe, Emmerson) and did what neither could do- write masterpiece novels.

Concentrate on life- literary vision, style and use of similar forms (short story, novel). Did Hawthorne write any poetry?

I have to give you credit - that is the most intelligent question of the day! Why work when you can "borrow?" Honestly, I applaud you - I just wrote a seven page essay of William Blake and I should have used your method, it would have saved me some fine holiday fun!

Sorry don't have a Poe/Hawthorne essay, but it wouldn't be too hard to write one. Both have similar writing styles.

First of all-Hawthorne and Poe do NOT have similar writing styles. Hawthorne was more talented, but less popular. Poe was very repetitive. Read the literature-you might be suprised how much you like it.
