Memory stick formatting problems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have a problem with my Epson RX500 card reader not seeing the 128mb stick even tho' there are circa 80 images on it. However, the RX500 sees the pics on a 8mb stick that came with my Sony DCR-PC120E and also the 32mb stick that came with a pals Sony DSC-P10. I formatted the 128mb stick and have lost all the images now but have them on my PC anyway. But I still want to know how I can format the 128 so that the RX500 can see it. There is nothing on the Sony link http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/bin/support/support.cgi? whichone=1&installfile=msfmtinst210.txt&downloadfile=MSFMTINST210.EXE and Sony blame Epson and Epson say they cannot help and I believe them. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem but I am using a 256MB SD card. I can see files on the card on occasion but the files size is 0MB. I have not tried any other cards to see if they work. If you find an answer I would like to know what it is.

To:- jeffreybott@netscape.net Glad to hear from you but I have nothing to add - yet!!! The latest is that Sony (UK) have not replied to an e-mail (it might put them on the spot perhaps so that they cannot get away with the glib answers I had on the phone. I told them to go worldwide for a better answer!!!) but Epson (UK) asked me to send the memstick for them to test. Am expecting an answer from them any minute - not that I think they will have anything to offer but at least they show willing to try. Where are you trying to download to? My PC sees any images OK so I do not really have a problem from that point of view. However, my Epson printer/scanner should be seeing the pics but isn't. A minor beef perhaps but that is me. If it don't work when it should I want to know why!!!! Will be in touch if I get something worthwhile. Hugh Allen

Try the following I posted earlier on this forum ------------------------------------------------ MY SOLUTION: I have Lexar 128 MS, was trying to read it using Dazzle 6 in 1 card reader on Windows 2K but it could not recognized and asked me to format it. No way, I didn't wanted to loose my pictures. I downloaded FREE 'PC Inspector Smart Revovery' (http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/welcome.htm). Simple, Beautiful, Intelligent and perfect software for problems like this. I recovered everything and now Windows Explorer recognize the Memory Stick.

The PC Inspector Smart Recovery worked great! I'm not sure about my card being read in XP yet though. Great tip! Thanks!

To:-Scott McAnally. You might already know that PC Inspector has a File Recover utility too. I had the same problem with XP too and this time I tried File Recovere. It took approx 1.5hrs to extract files from the Memory Stick.
