Hop-Frog was one of Poe's last works. It deals with the concept of revenge, as did "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Black Cat". The story opens with the introduction of a king and his seven court ministers. The king is a man who loves a joke, particularly of the practical nature. Among his court is a deformed dwarf jester named Hop-Frog who amuses the king because of his deformity and lack of alcohol tolerance. There is also a young girl named Tripetta who has the king's favor. Hop-Frog is very fond of Tripetta and perhaps in love with her. When the king pushes her away and throws a goblet of wine in her face, Hop-Frog becomes terribly angry at this. To exact his revenge for the king's mistreatment of the girl, the dwarf dresses the king and his ministers up as ourang-outangs as a joke for an upcoming masquerade ball. The king and his ministers go along because they think it's all part of a practical joke. The joke is on them, however, when Hop-Frog chains them up to a chandelier hook and sets them all on fire to burn.
