glass or wire?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

I have noticed that several companies offer glass reticles instead of wire. Is there really a difference in performance? Also, when the windage/elevation knobs are turned, what moves if the reticle is glass? thanks. -joe

The wire reticule is a thing of the past. The etched ret is now and forever as it is far better than a wire ret for many reasons. The best reasons are, it will not break or wear out, it is more accurate, and it has better contrast against the background. It can also be lit accuratly in any color. Lit ret's are getting far more popular on sniper type scopes as they give you alot contrast in lighting between the background and ret. I have and use both but in a wartime situation you may not want a lit reticule at nigt for obvious reasons!! Hope this answers our question!

new to this site, this will stir some stuff, go with the etched glass, wire reticles have a problem in the direct sunlight on a fixed range, like when you don't put a scope cover over lenses and the wire on a low to medium class scope can melt. experience in this matter is first hand with low income departments, where the city officials believe air rifle scopes will work on a REM700 PSS just fine. Go to premierreticles.com and email chris. loves to talk about proper equipment.

dropped in today looking for Savage 110 info- lots of good info here, so I decided to contribute.

modern scopes are pretty damn tough, , but a wire teticle is just that- a THIN wire suspended in mid- nitrogen. Inertia of even thin wires is enough to occasionally break under stiff recoil or after several thousand rounds. Etched or "glass" reticles are lines etched into one of the lenses, and are as tough as any other lens in the scope. Etched reticles are therefore usually much tougher than wire. Wire reticles are typically tough enough, but if you do a lot of shooting with a rifle in magnum calibers or with recoil equal to or greater than a 7.62 Nato, the etched reticle is probably a good idea
