Has Poe ever used the same character in more than one short story? In other words has Poe ever extended a character beyond just one story?

Yes! Edgar Allan Poe used the amateur French detective by the name of C.Auguste Dupin, as a major character in three of his detective stories: "The Murders In The Rue Morgue," "The Mystery of Marie Roget," and "The Purloined Letter" each story was written and published about two years apart.

Also, Poe himself figures in as a hoaxing narrator in many stories such as "The Premature Burial" "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym" and many others. Pym and Junius Rodman are two characters with the most extrended narratives, trying to be serial novels but being dropped probably in both cases. When Poe seems to be present though in poems or stories he becomes primarily a fictional character to suit the work of art.
