Edgar Allan Poe's last words were: "Lord Help My Poor Soul"

The reports are unreliable, especially the edifying reliigous sentiments developed on the lucrative lecture circuit by the attending physician, Dr. Moran. According to him, Poe's momentary lucidity(if any) lasted to the point of death so he could make a great speech of repentance and morals. One rant "if I had a friend he would blow my brains out"(I'm paraphrasing) sounds better but plainly Poe was not doing well enough to make a statement. His early mumblings about "Reynolds" could have been anything and have been theorized to death with similar edifying explanations that cannot be proven at all. At the most he was expressing his pain and requests for friends or family. "Last words" is right up there with "important awards" and what someone carved on a memorial. Irrelevant.
