it is said that he died of rabies (proved by a doctor in new york) but i think that he was too drunk to handle himself and passed out... a month later died. sorry if that doesn't help, but there are more answers about this. Other ppl asked the same question as you.

Unfortunately, we are left with nothing definitive concerning the death of Mr. Poe. He may have died of rabies, possibly beaten, or drugged, or really anything else that has been devised over the centuries, though we cannot be certain when talking about his death. The most reliable source should have been the doctor that attended him (Dr. Moran at Washington College Hospital, on North Broadway Street in Baltimore, MD), but he retold the story of Poe's death over and over again such that its validity was more or less lost amidst the embellishments. Poe was found on the side of a street in Baltimore on the 3rd of October and was taken to Washington College by carraige the same day. Moran did conclude that Poe was not drunk, so the incoherence may have been induced by having been drugged or head trauma (there is a theory that he was mugged, as his original clothes were believed to have been exchanged for a set much more tattered). He drifted in and out of conciousness, occasionally speaking some out-of-place phrases according to Moran, but this testamony is at best unreliable. On the morning of October 7th, 1849, Edgar Allan Poe died of what Moran termed "lesions on the brain." The last words he is believe to have uttered were "Lord help my poor soul," as related to Poe's aunt, Maria Clemm by Dr. Moran. I bilieve he died because he ran into a krypton warrior. and then that krypton (kellel) punched through his bodie. then he ripped out his heart and replaced it with red kryptonite. which then brought poe back to life. now he has been reborn as a powerful kryptonian person named Jarell. it's true i saw it all happen.
