7mm Rem. Mag. vs.7.62 NATO

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MILDOT : One Thread

Can anyone tell me the difference between the 7mm Rem. Mag. vs. 7.62 NATO, as far as accuracy, and range, the bullets seem to be awefully close, but the powder in the casings, is the difference, along with the casing.

Thank You, Semper Fi

I'm in the National Guard Infantry, and well on my way to qualifying as a Scout/Sniper. I practice with both a M1A Springfield National Match and a Savage (highly reworked) that's chambered in Rem. 7mm Mag. The first post pretty well summed up the ballistics, and as far a practical difference in the field, I would have to say, chose what best suits your needs. The .308 is a great overall round, decent range, accuracy, and knock down power for light game such as deer. The 7mm has better range, and accuracy provided you don't develop a noticable flinch from the recoil, and it's decent for larger game such as Elk. The tradeoff is that 7mm ammo is somewhat more expensive, which really comes into play if you plan spending a lot of time at the range. Bottom line, their both great at what they do, and the choice is something you should make to best fit your needs.

Basic difference between the two is The 7mm RM travels a whole lot faster than the 7.62 NATO (AKA the .308 Winchester). By the way, the 7mm bullet measures .284 inch and the 7.62 is .308 inch diameter. The difference in velocity means the 7mm shoots "flatter." That is, it takes less time for the 7mm RM bullet to reach its target, thus gravity has less time to act on the bullet, THUS you don't have to adjust your scope as much to compensate for far targets. Oh, yeah, it kicks harder, too. And the ammo costs more. And if you reload your empty brass, it'll take more gunpowder.
