playing on one player but not another

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi all. I have a vcd (dvd?) that I want to play on my scondary dvd player but it won't. It will play on my main one but not on the other. I have put it in my pc and can play it on there, as well as being able to explore the various files on the disc. I have compared it to another disc that DOES play on my second player and the files look exactly the same names apart from in the one that does play there is content in the file named : segment but in the disc that won't play this content is missing. Does anyone have any ideas. I was told that the disc that wont play is a multi region dvd but I thought that if that was the case it wouldn't play through the cd drive in my pc. Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanx

Go to http://www.vcdhelp.com and look at the DVD Player Compatibility List for the DVD player that won't play your VCD. First of all, you do need to figure out if you have a VCD or DVD because it makes a big difference. Look at the directories of the disc and if you have a MPEGAV directory, it's a VCD. DVD would contain a VIDEO_TS directory. I'm assuming it's VCD since it plays in a CD drive. DVD would require a DVD drive. You have 3 potential problems and the Compatibility List may help you to figure out which is the problem. 1) Your DVD player demands absolute compliance with VCD standards and the absence of the SEGMENT directory is causing it to refuse to play the disc. 2) Your DVD player doesn't support CD-R/CD-RW media. 3) Your DVD player won't play VCD on any media. There is no fix for problems 2 & 3. Problem 1 might be fixable by using VCDgear to extract the *.DAT file(s) in the MPEGAV directory and reburning them in VCD format with a burning program such as Nero.

Thanx for that. I have downloaded VCDgear and saved it to my hard drive. I need some help on how to extract the *DAT file in the MPEGAV directory and how to burn it to cd through Nero (which I use). Will this then make it possible to play it through my swecond dvd player which I KNOW will play other vcd's as I have done it before.. Thanx again. Phil.
