What does the shikon jewel do? If they have ever said in the series I missed it.

Inu Yasha will become full demon when all the shards are collected.

It gives tons of power/energy to any one humen/demon who has it. Plus that human Inu thing.

I dont think the Shikon no Tama (Shikon Jewel) has any definable purpose or power, its only certain trait is that its evil. It takes what is in the heart of the beholder and amplifies their desires and strengths to give them ultimate, yet evil, power.

When Kikyo guarded it, she was able to purify its evil ONLY because she was trained as a Miko to be completely untainted and pure of heart, which is why she became weaker when she fell in love with Inuyasha-- a hanyou. Her heart desired to be with a demon, giving the Shikon a source of potential darkness in Kikyo's heart to feed on. It was also Naraku's purpose to fill Kikyo's heart with hatred so as to corrupt the Shikon no Tama and unleash its evil.

Then you may ask, why doesn't the Shikon corrupt Kagome when she loves Inuyasha too? Well, it doesn't work on Kagome because I believe she sees her love for Inuyasha as a strength not a weakness, which is where Kikyo went tragically wrong. Hence her (kinda selfishly) asking Inuyasha to become fully human, whereas Kagome has said on a few occassions she loves Inuyasha the hanyou, and doesnt want him to change.

I'm going off on a tangent here... ¬_¬ So anyway, that's my take on the Shikon no Tama. ^^
