history of the tensions between clinical and counseling psychology

greenspun.com : LUSENET : History & Theory of Psychology : One Thread

Hello, I am writing a research paper on the history of the tensions between clinical and counseling psychology. I know that there was talk of merging the two classifications in the early years, much controversy surrounding this, and eventually a further divide between the two, but I had little luck finding a book or research paper on the topic. Even the name of an author who has written on the topic would be great. Thank you very much. Jennie Ward

You might check the multi-volume history of the divisions of the American Psychological Association edited by Donald Dewsbury (published by the American Psychological Association) and mentioned in several previous posts on this site. There are probably clues in the history of division 17 (counseling psychology). You may also find answers in the following books:

1980 Whiteley, John M. (Ed.) The History of Counseling Psychology. Monterey, CA: Brooks/Cole.

1984 Whiteley, John M Counseling Psychology: A Historical Perspective. Schenectady, NY: Alexandria, VA: Character Research Press
