Aside from a very studied theory about rabies, in general it seems Poe's mysterious disappearance and reappearance in fatal condition might be attributed to being shanghaied by a vote fraud gang and plied with liquor.

In any event poverty, his stress over his wife's death and his job, his long bout with alcoholism which ruined his health, even the stress of going on the wagon were contributing factors to his death.
