Besides inferred references to "madman" not madwoman, characteristics such as a "hearty laugh" and masculine traits and other logical deductions it was extremely uncommon for Poe to enter into the mind of a woman in any tale(exception for one humorous tale, "Scheherazade"). Even in "The Premature Burial where he enters the mind reactions of victims and himself, the woman example is not so intimately treated. His deeply symbolic relationship to women figures is always fixed thusly.
