I suppose it is "Eddy" used most familiarly in his home by his mother-in-law("Muddy") and his wife Virginia("Sissy"). Poe loved nicknames and renaming acquaintances himself. These family type names perhaps expressed a strong need for the family he never had as an orphan. Perhaps it came from his youthful days as a child.
