Better to read Poe's own essays on writing to be found at www.eapoe.org and elsewhere. Poe, as other Romantics liked to develop classical unoties to include a strong emotional and metaphysical core. The emotional effect of the story was to be the supreme unity, hence the details and elements could be vague and suggestive as in a dream or sensory deprivation closing in and trapping the reader. The story must be able to be read in one sitting like the length of a drama(hence the dramatic unties of time, place, etc.). As in Usher all the elements not only serve the main purpose but embody it together and in communion as well. Hence characters and plot may actually be rather simple and the didactic musings complete with complex erudite allusions mostly their to color and direct the particular emotion- not teach a moral or logical lesson.
