What are the characteristics of the raven, what it's like ( in the book )? if it's a bad ill omen, and why? why does it always say "nevermore"? PS: THE BOOK I AM TALKING ABOUT IS ONE OF HIS SHORT STORIES ; THE RAVEN.

The raven(Corvus corax)is first cousin to the common crow. Ravens and crows are the most intelligent of birds, and their cleverness earned them a reputation for having prophetic powers. Ancient Romans, for example, tried to predict the future by studying the flight of crows, and there are those who still believe that they can fortell good or bad luck by counting the critters. Ravens, however, also have an unsavory reputation because of their habit of eating corpses, especially on battlefields. Being big, black, harsh-voiced scavenging birds, they became associated with death and disaster.

Myself, I think the raven in Poe's poem is the embodiment of the narrator's dispair. He knows it will always give him the same answer, but he can't help asking it anyway. At first he believes that it's just a bird that was once somebody's pet, and says "Nevermore" because that's the only word it knows. (Ravens can be taught to "talk," like parrots.) But it motionless in his room in perpetuity, and no living bird ever did that.

The Raven represents his sorrow of his Lenore he lost. when the raven says nevermore he is merely saying that his Lenore cannot be returned

The raven is a carnivore and is known for it's predatory mannerisms. It is also associated with evil for its color--black.

It always says "nevermore," because Poe liked the word, thought it would be creepy to hear a raven saying it, and decided to use it because he thought it would contribute to the eerie mood (take it from an English teacher).
