"Take, beloved son this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in dangers, a pledge of peace and of the covenant".

Scapulars are given to those celebrating their first Holy Communion. What is the purpose of Scapulars today?

There are many kinds of scapulars. You are in alliance with the Religious order of the scapular you are wearing and therefore, you will obtain the spiritual benefits of the merits given to that particular religious order by God. The most common one in the Catholic Church is the Brown Scapular ~ if you wear this one, you will obtain the spiritual benefits and merits given to the Carmelite order.

However, the Brown Scapular has stipulations :

first, you have to be properly invested with the Scapular by a priest; (in your case, you already have been properly invested during your Holy Communion, if the priest himself is the one who put it on you.)

second, you have to wear it continuously;

third, you have to either pray the Rosary every day or pray the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (this is a small booklet of prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary; morning and evening prayers) everyday;

and fourth, you must be Chaste ~ either chaste as a single person or chaste as a married person.

The material of the Brown Scapular is wool.

No Lamb should be without his wool.

The purpose of the Scapular in the 21st Century is still the same ~ you are basically wearing your wool ~ just like a soldier wears his combat outfit. You are identifying yourself as a Catholic ~ so when Holy Heaven looks upon the earth, they go, "O there's that Lamb, that Catholic Christian, Rod, wearing his wool; let us pray for him, and bless him, and protect him, and keep him, and heal him, and intercede for him, and surround him."
