Venice, Italy near the Bridge of Sighs. The poet lover sees the woman who had deserted(in England) him to marry a man she didn't love when he saves her child she dropped(intentionally) into the canal. Then he goes back to his apartments and an "assignation" is arranged- actually a double suicide. They join in one act of love/rebellion/despair symbolically united but still geographically apart, to be united beyond this tragic life.
