Poe's older brother died the way their father did, of health deteriorated by alcoholism. Rosalie lived 1811 to 1874 and died in poverty in Washington D.C. at the Epiphany Church Home with a $50 charity check clutched in her hand.Poe's mother died of tuberculosis. She had been raised by the MacKensies when the family was divided up after their mother's death, never married nor made any financial success of her connection to Poe. The older brother went to sea, wrote some of his own poetry.
