Edgar Allan Poe's life affected his writing in his constant talk of revenge and the morose and lonely life. He was always getting criticized for his "unusual" and "poor" works of literature, which the conservative and ill-changing reviewers critiqued his writing. Through his wrting, he spoke of the world he lived and the thoughts that were in his mind. Perhaps it was to give readers an idea of what his life was like, or to vent his anger in a non-violent way, but it is obvious from his writing and what is known of his life that he and his charcters-whether they were villains or the victims-were very much similar in their outlook on life and their feelings. Cynicism, satirical society, revenge, loneliness...It's all about him, but in a cleverly disguised, subtle way.

His work is so depressing because his biological mother died when he was very young and then his father walked out on him short after. His foster mother wanted to adopt him but his foster father didn't because his foster father wanted to have a biological son to leave his heir to. His foster parents had a pretty good amount of money. He went to the University of Virginia and got kicked out and then his "father" helped him get into West Point Military Academy but his father had a way of showing Edgar that he was dissappointed in him. After his foster mother died, his foster father got remarried to a younger woman who was able to have children so Edgar gave up on asking his "dad" for any help. He then went to live with his aunt and cousin (Virginia) and ended up marrying Virginia who was 13. I think it was 5 years after marrying her she died of tubercleousis. She was the only person he felt really understood him and her death had a very dramatic affect on him. I think this is what influenced his writing to be so depressing. I hope it can be of some help to you. ~Tara~

his narrators confess to their crimes because they feel guilty. edger is using these narrators as symbols of how he wants his fathers (real and adopted) to act and confess to all the hell they put him through,

His 13 year old wife (E.A Poe 20) died a few years after they wed. His background life was horrific His stories probably reflected on the depression of his own life. Some people think he wrote horror stories because he wanted the rest of the world to feel like he did
